New Producer and Label = bad direction
I have always liked Sarah McLachlan. Seems like a pretty down to earth and beautiful woman. THe first 4 Albums are great. Largely due I suspect by the guiding hand of producer Pierre Marchand. Of course the smaterial was great as well. Deep, spiritual and introspective songs.
Sarah has certainly changed her tune these days and her approach to song writing. I'm not a huge follower of her, but from what I gathered I think she ditched Pierre and did some work with Bob Rock. I had laws of Illusion on the playlist when I worked at the bookstore. Some of it was good but I think it maybe wasn't quite what she wanted?
Anyway, the plus side is Sarah sounds happy in her songs now. They now have a light touch that also unfortunently soends focus group and record label approved. very sanitary. And now comes the Christmas albums. I guess that is what is in her contract. I'm sure they do well but the depth she potentially has. The soulfulness is pretty much gone.
Hopefully, i dont sound too hipster by criticising her a little bit. I mean how may artists have 4 great albums? She is obviously very talented and I'm sure to a lot of people this is the best album.
Sometimes artists reinvent themselves for a new generation. It happens. I am grateful for the soulful, elegant, wide eyed Sarah Mclachlan that is in my mind and I will keep my ears open to see where she goes...
