The dream team has returned to co-composer the sequel to their fantastic score of Kung Fu Panda. Zimmer and Powell make a terrific team, with each having stengths that compliment each other. If you loved the themes from the first movie, expect them to make a triumphant return, along with new ones, which are just as catchy. However, there is a caveat to this second go-round: The once finely crafted and intricately maintained Chinese sound is gone from this score. In the first score, one of the things that stood out the most me was the impressive use of Chinese instruments and musical scales to create a sound that, while far from authentic, was certainly quite distinct and seperate from your typical movie score fair. However, in this score the hollywood bombasity is back, making it feel a little less crafted and a little more slap-dash than the first go round. However, that is not to say that the score is not good. In fact, my favorite track off of either the first or second score is Zen Ball Master, number 15 on this album. Just be prepared for it to be a little less creative and little more standard than last time.
